Serving Langley and the Lower Mainland since 2012
Living with Anxiety
The constant what-ifs that won’t quiet down. The racing heart before situations that seem straightforward to everyone else. The exhaustion of being on high alert, waiting for something to go wrong even when nothing is.
Anxiety isn’t always loud. Sometimes it looks like overthinking every conversation after it’s over. Cancelling plans because the thought of going feels like too much. Lying awake running through scenarios that probably won’t happen but feel completely real at 2am. It can look like perfectionism, people-pleasing, or just a general sense that you’re never quite okay.
You’ve probably tried to manage it. Told yourself to stop worrying. Breathed through it. Avoided the things that trigger it. And maybe that’s worked, up to a point. But avoidance tends to shrink your world over time, and the anxiety doesn’t actually go anywhere. It just finds new things to attach to.
At Lavender Counselling, we don’t treat anxiety as a flaw to correct or a set of symptoms to suppress. We see it as your nervous system communicating something worth paying attention to, about what you’ve been through, what you’re carrying, and what you need. Our approach is relational and person-centred, which means we’re interested in understanding your anxiety, not just managing it. When you understand what’s driving it, something starts to shift.

We serve clients throughout Langley, Vancouver, Surrey, Maple Ridge, Abbotsford, and the Lower Mainland with flexible in-person sessions at our Langley and Vancouver offices, plus secure virtual counselling throughout British Columbia

How We Support Anxiety
We approach every person and every story as unique. Our counsellors work alongside you, not as experts who know more about you than you do, but as companions helping you rediscover your own inner wisdom. Here’s how we work together:
Get to Know the Problem
We begin by understanding how anxiety shows up in your life. Instead of treating symptoms in isolation, we take time to listen deeply to your story, your body, your relationships, and the context around your experience. We want to know what anxiety feels like for you, what triggers it, and what it’s been trying to protect you from.
"Anxiety is often a messenger—our work begins by understanding what it's trying to say."
Assess the Root Cause
Together, we look beneath the surface. Anxiety often takes root in disconnection from safety, from self-trust, or from others. Through gentle exploration, we help uncover those underlying patterns, whether they stem from early experiences, chronic stress, trauma, or relational wounds. The goal isn’t to analyze you, but to help you make meaning of your experience in a compassionate and empowering way.
"When we understand where anxiety comes from, we stop fighting ourselves and start listening."
Treat From the Bottom Up
Healing anxiety starts in the body, not just the mind. We may use bottom-up, evidence informed approaches, helping your nervous system find safety again through mindfulness, somatic awareness, and emotion regulation skills. This creates the foundation for genuine change, rather than surface-level coping. Our counsellors weave these practices within a person-centered relationship, ensuring every step is collaborative, respectful, and paced according to your readiness.
"We don't force change—we nurture it, from the inside out."
Our Approach Helps You:
- Understand anxiety as communication, not pathology
- Discover and heal the root causes beneath distress
- Re-establish safety in your body and trust in yourself
- Build lasting resilience through compassion and connection

What To Expect In Anxiety Counselling

Your First Session
Your first session is about getting to know you. We’ll explore what brings you to counselling, what your anxiety looks like day-to-day, and what you hope to gain from therapy. There’s no pressure to have everything figured out or to share more than you’re comfortable with. This is your space, and we move at your pace. Many clients feel nervous before their first session, that’s completely normal, and your therapist will help you feel at ease.

Our Collaborative Approach
We work with you, not on you. Together we’ll develop a therapy plan that honors your unique triggers, patterns, and goals. Therapy moves at your pace, there are no artificial deadlines or pressure to “fix” your anxiety on someone else’s timeline. Some clients see improvement in a few months; others prefer ongoing support as they navigate different life stages. This is about lasting change that works for your life, not quick fixes that fade.

Confidentiality
Everything you share remains confidential within legal and ethical boundaries. Your counsellor will walk through all of this in your first session so there are no surprises. Your privacy and safety are paramount. You can trust that your struggles stay between you and your therapist.

Flexible, Ongoing Support
Some clients benefit from weekly sessions, especially at the beginning. Others prefer every other week or monthly check-ins once they have solid coping strategies. We adapt to your needs and never impose arbitrary session limits. Your therapy is yours to shape, you decide when to increase frequency, when to space out sessions, and when you feel ready to wrap up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. All our therapists have specialized training in anxiety treatment through their clinical education, and many pursue additional certifications in specific modalities like AEDP, EFT, Focusing, and somatic approaches. You won’t need to educate your therapist about anxiety, they already understand it deeply, both clinically and relationally.
Everyone experiences anxiety sometimes, it’s a normal human emotion and a natural protective response. Anxiety becomes a disorder when it’s persistent, excessive, interferes with daily functioning, and causes significant distress. If worry is taking up too much space in your life or preventing you from doing things you want to do, therapy can help regardless of whether you have a formal diagnosis. You don’t need to meet diagnostic criteria to deserve support.
Therapists (counsellors) cannot prescribe medication, only psychiatrists and doctors can. However, therapy can be highly effective for anxiety with or without medication. Many people find that therapy alone is sufficient, especially when it addresses the root causes and nervous system patterns. Others benefit from combining therapy with medication prescribed by their doctor. Your therapist can discuss the role of medication with you and support you in making informed decisions with your healthcare provider.
While CBT focuses primarily on changing thoughts, our relational, person-centered approach works from the bottom up, starting with your body and nervous system before moving to thoughts. We view anxiety as communication rather than a problem to fix, and we work alongside you as companions rather than experts applying techniques. That said, some of our therapists integrate CBT tools within a broader relational framework when appropriate. It’s not either/or, it’s about what serves you best.
This varies significantly by person. Some clients experience meaningful relief in 8-12 sessions of focused work, especially if they’re learning new skills for specific situations. Others benefit from longer-term support, particularly if anxiety has been part of their life for many years or is connected to deeper patterns or trauma. We don’t impose arbitrary limits, your therapy continues as long as it’s helpful to you.
Absolutely. We offer secure video counselling throughout British Columbia. Many clients find virtual sessions just as effective as in-person therapy, the relational connection happens across the screen, and you have the added benefit of accessing support from the comfort of home (which can feel safer when you’re anxious). You’re welcome to start virtually and transition to in-person, or vice versa, at any time.
Finding the right therapeutic fit is crucial for anxiety work, you need to feel safe and understood to do this work effectively. If after your first session (or even a few sessions) you don’t feel connected to your therapist, please let us know. We’ll help you find a better match within our team. There’s no judgment or pressure, we genuinely want you to feel comfortable and supported. The relationship is the foundation of healing.
If anxiety is affecting your quality of life, relationships, work, sleep, or happiness, it’s “bad enough.” You don’t need to be in crisis or meet a certain severity threshold to deserve support. Many clients wish they’d started therapy sooner rather than waiting until anxiety was overwhelming. Therapy can help whether your anxiety is mild, moderate, or severe, early support often prevents anxiety from becoming more entrenched.
